The Baltimore Ravens will likely fire offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg after Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Mornhinweg is the Ravens’ fifth offensive coordinator in five years.

The Baltimore Ravens will be preparing to search for a new offensive coordinator this offseason, as reports surface that the team is likely to fire current offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg after this Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mornhinweg was promoted this season after offensive coordinator Marc Trestman was fired by the team. The Baltimore Ravens’ offense improved, albeit only slightly, under Mornhinweg, though it was the team’s defense that kept them in the playoff race this season.

The Ravens have gone through five offensive coordinators in the past five seasons, and they will be preparing to find a sixth for the upcoming 2017 season.

More from Baltimore Ravens

Coach John Harbaugh will be staying this upcoming season, but it would not be a surprise to see him in the hot seat in 2017, as the Ravens have now missed the playoffs for the third time in four years.

We’ve written here that we believe Harbaugh needs to stay in Baltimore, and that he’s not entirely to blame for the team’s struggles. One of the biggest issues with the team has been their offense, so the need for a change in offensive coordinator is only natural.

The Ravens’ defense this season was one of the best, if not the best, defenses in the league, and had the team’s offense been better, they would likely be on their way to the playoffs rather than playing for pride in Cincinnati next week.

One of the biggest tasks for the next offensive coordinator of the Ravens will be getting quarterback Joe Flacco back on track. In the four seasons since the Ravens won the Super Bowl, and Flacco won the Super Bowl MVP (and signed a massive contract), Flacco has never finished in the top-10 in the NFL in passer rating.

Marc Trestman was supposed to be the guy to get Flacco going, Trestman had a reputation in the NFL as “the quarterback whisperer”, but that didn’t work out this year. The Ravens are also in desperate need for a more balanced offense, and for better performance out of some of their draft picks.

Hopefully the Ravens will find themselves a solid offensive coordinator who can help balance the team and make the Ravens the competitive Super Bowl contender we all know they can be.
