Maryland Terrapins football despite finishing with a losing record appeared in the Quick Lane Bowl and earned their third bowl appearance in the past four years.

Although the Maryland Terrapins football team have seen better years, 2016 still provided an assortment of captivating moments along with optimism of a better 2017 season.

Maryland Terrapins football bowl eligibility was in jeopardy after a daunting three-game stretch against Michigan, Ohio State, and Nebraska where the Terps were outscored 149-13.

Fortunately, the Terps had one last chance to gain their sixth win to become bowl-eligible in the team’s season finale game against Rutgers at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Maryland jumped out to a 14 point first quarter lead and never looked back as they beat Rutgers 31-13.

Quick summary of the Quick Lane Bowl

The Maryland Terrapins were paired with Boston College for the Quick Lane Bowl in Detriot, Michigan. After trailing Boston College 16 points at the half, which stretched to the 36-13 Boston College lead early in the third quarter.

Maryland scurried back and cut the Boston College lead to just nine points at the end of the third quarter. After a quiet fourth quarter start by both teams, Maryland converted on a field goal to bring the score to 36-30, but that’s as close as the Terps would get eventually falling to Boston College to end the 2016 year.

Sophomore running back Ty Johnson had a memorable game rushing for 159 yards with two touchdowns that kept Maryland within striking distance in the second half. Check out Johnson’s video highlights from the Quick Lane Bowl below.

2017 Maryland Terrapins outlook

With a roster full of recruitments from former head coach Randy Edsall, the 2017 recruiting class feature an array of the high-caliber football players, recruited by current Maryland coach D.J. Durkin. According to 247Sports, the Maryland Terrapins 2017 recruiting class ranks 17th best in the nation and fourth-best in the Big Ten.

The 2017 recruiting class consists of six four-star commits including Oxon Hill standout Deon Jones, DeMatha star offensive tackle Marcus Minor, St. John’s College HS quarterback Kasim Hill, offensive tackle Jordan McNair, defensive tackle Cam Spence, and Bishop Sullivan Catholic’s Breyon Gaddy.

The Maryland Terrapins football team opens the 2017 season against Texas on September 2, 2017, in Austin, Texas. The Maryland-Texas non-conference agreement also includes a 2018 opening season matchup at FedEx Field on September 1, 2018.
