Former Baltimore Ravens safety and future Hall of Famer Ed Reed will join the Buffalo Bills as an assistant defensive backs coach.

Ed Reed has been looking for a way to get back into football. After unsuccessful attempts to keep his playing career going, he’s decided to turn to coaching.

Ed Reed will join former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan in Buffalo and become the assistant defensive back for the Bills. The safety played for Ryan with the Ravens (2005-2008) and the Jets (2013). Reed drew high praise from Ryan.

"“Ed Reed is going to be such a great asset to our team. Obviously he’s played in this system and been an MVP caliber guy in this system. He’s going to be such a great asset for players. He’s a real student of the game as well and he’s going to be a phenomenal coach.”"

The Ravens legend expressed interest in becoming the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes when the job became vacant. It was too early for Reed to get a head coaching job because he had no history as a coach at any level. While he is a student of the game, he still needs to learn certain aspects of coaching that come with experience.

Some Ravens fans have been outraged that Reed is in Buffalo and not with the coaching staff in Baltimore. Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com explained why that could not be the case just yet. There are still a few guys on the team that played with Reed and they will see him more as a buddy on the team than a coach. He also was not the easiest guy for coaches to deal with.

There is no denying that the bond between Reed and Ryan is what brought this together. The two have been fond of each other for some time now as Reed wanted Ryan to succeed Brian Billick. When it looked like Reed was finished in the NFL after being cut by the Houston Texans, Ryan scooped him up and gave him his last chance. Now he gives him his first coaching opportunity.
