A new team has surfaced in the sweepstakes for Baltimore Orioles superstar Manny Machado as we inch closer to the MLB trade deadline.

The San Diego Padres are reportedly the latest team to check the trade status of Baltimore Orioles All-Star Manny Machado.

The report comes from Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports who described the latest Orioles trade rumors as ” a long shot” due to their position in the National League West standings. Entering Saturday’s slate of games, the Padres are 35-43 and sit 8 1/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks, another team reportedly in the Machado sweepstakes.

Heyman also points out that Machado is a free agent following the season and the Padres would likely rent him for half a season with basically no chance of signing him to a long-term deal.

However, the Padres are loaded with elite prospects that could intrigue the Baltimore Orioles such as promising shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who is ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects. Furthermore, Tatis Jr. is the top-ranked Padres prospect and the No. 1 overall shortstop prospect in baseball.

The Padres also own another promising middle infielder in Luis Urias, who is the No. 31 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and is atop the overall second base rankings.

Despite being at the bottom of the NL West standings, the Padres are 7 1/2 games back from the final NL wild card spot and a superstar like Machado could jumpstart a second-half run in hopes of a final playoff push.
