4. Orioles offense starting to heat up?

Are the Orioles headed for an offensive surge? It sure wouldn’t hurt, for a team that is struggling to pitch right now.

The Orioles now have six players with home runs. Chris Davis has 14, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop have 13, Adam Jones and Trey Mancini have 12, and Mark Trumbo has 10.

Only one other team has that many players with 10 home runs, and that is the New York Yankees.

The Orioles got home runs from Seth Smith to lead off Sunday’s game, then Trey Mancini, Mark Trumbo and Welington Castillo, all off starter Lance Lynn.

On Saturday, it was Adam Jones and Mark Trumbo going deep in the first inning, Manny Machado in the second and two Jonathan Schoop home runs that followed.

Despite all the power, the team also did a good job of hitting with runners in scoring position and scoring without the home run.

But, let’s not get carried away. On Friday the Orioles got thrashed 11-2, with a solo home run by Trey Mancini in the ninth inning with two outs accounting for one of the runs.

So, while the last two games have Oriole fans dreaming of crooked innings, let’s not think the offense is back just yet.
