The Baltimore Ravens have traded DL Timmy Jernigan and a third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for the Eagles’ third-round pick.

The Baltimore Ravens have traded defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan along with a third-round draft pick (No. 99 overall) to the Philadelphia Eagles for the Eagles’ third-round pick (No. 74 overall).

The Ravens have been talking about trading Jernigan to free up some cap space for a little while now, and that’s primarily what the purpose of this move is.

Jernigan has one year left on his contract and is likely going to command a large salary next offseason. By trading him, the Ravens save $1.02M in cap room while creating just under $377,000 in dead money.

The Ravens recently re-signed defensive lineman Brandon Williams to a gigantic five-year, $52.5M contract that comes with $24.5M guaranteed, so it makes sense that they would try and free up as much cap space as possible, and being able to move up a bit in the third round doesn’t hurt either.

Jernigan is 24-years-old, entering his fourth season in the NFL, and the Florida State product is, without a doubt, one of the better interior defenders in the NFL. He played in all 16 games for the Baltimore Ravens last season and ended the year with 31 tackles, five sacks, three deflected passes, and one interception. He was rated by Pro Football Focus as the 42nd best interior defender in the league.

While the trade, on the surface, may seem like the Ravens are giving up one of the best defensive linemen in the league for virtually nothing, it’s truly a “something is better than nothing” trade.

The Ravens obviously feel that they won’t be able to re-sign Jernigan after this year, so they figure they might as well get something (moving up in the third round of this year’s draft) rather than just one year of Jernigan and then nothing.

We won’t really be able to judge how good this deal is until later, as we don’t know who the Ravens will be able to draft with their new draft pick, but this could work out well for the Ravens.
