Baltimore Ravens hire former Buffalo Bills OC Greg Roman

The Baltimore Ravens have added former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman to their coaching staff for this upcoming season. As of now, his role on the team is “still being sorted out”, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Despite having a relatively poor offense this past season, and cries for his firing, the Baltimore Ravens decided to keep offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg going into the 2017 season.
However it would appear likely that Greg Roman will now be the backup in case Mornhinweg does just as poorly or worse next season and the team feels they need to let him go.

Considering the Baltimore Ravens’ history with offensive coordinators, it’s more than likely Roman will essentially serve as Mornhinweg’s backup, just as Mornhinweg did for Marc Trestman, and Jim Caldwell did for Cam Cameron.
The Ravens have gone through five offensive coordinators in five seasons, stability is something the team’s coaching staff has lacked. It’s also something that I believe the coaching staff is in desperate need of. You can’t just throw offensive coordinators at the wall and hope someone will stick.
However, if the Ravens ultimately do decide to let Mornhinweg go during the 2017 season, it’s more than like Greg Roman would then step in.
Roman was fired from the Buffalo Bills early in the 2016 season after serving as their offensive coordinator for two years. Before he was in Buffalo, Roman served as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator for four years, and worked for the Stanford football team before that. Both with the 49ers and Stanford, Roman worked with Jim Harbaugh.
If everything works out perfectly, Roman will just be a complementary piece to the Ravens offensive coaching staff and Mornhinweg will be able to work out this offense and make them more balanced and more of a threat.

Though if I know the Ravens, we’ll probably be writing about how Roman is the new offensive coordinator this coming October. But hope springs eternal.
