The Baltimore Ravens are currently the number three seed in the AFC, in what’s been a rocky season to say the least.

If the season was over right now, the Baltimore Ravens would stand as the number three seed in the AFC, just ahead of the Houston Texans, and behind the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders.

Considering how much of a roller coaster of a season it’s been for the Baltimore Ravens, it’s honestly somewhat surprising to see them in such good standing currently in the AFC.

They have the same record as the Houston Texans at 6-5, but the Ravens are seeded ahead of them for being 6-2 in the AFC as opposed to Houston’s 4-4 record. They’re also ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North, despite both teams being 6-5 currently, because they beat Pittsburgh earlier this year.

The Ravens are far from running away with things however, and that’s what makes Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins so important. If the Ravens are able to win, that would give them a better record than, or at least a tiebreaker advantage over, every single AFC Wild Card contender, save the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs.

More from Baltimore Ravens

If the Ravens ended up with a number three seed in the AFC, it would be the first time in team history, and it would be the second-highest seed they’ve ever had, only getting up to a number two seed in 2006 and 2011.

It’s honestly pretty impressive that, considering the team is ranked so poorly in offense (currently tied #22 in the NFL in total offense), the team is doing so well, but that’s just a testament to their fantastic defensive play so far (currently #2 in the NFL in total defense).

The Ravens have their work cut out for them, however, as their upcoming schedule features three teams above .500 right now in the Dolphins (7-4), Patriots (9-2) and Steelers (6-5), as well as the Eagles (5-5) and one more matchup against the Bengals (3-7-1).

If they can continue playing strong the rest of the way, the Baltimore Ravens have a real shot at making their way into the playoffs at a relatively good seed. It won’t be easy, but if their defense keeps it up, they can do it. As they say, defense wins championships.
