Maryland Basketball: Terps, Georgetown to Meet Again in Gavitt Tipoff Games
By Joe Serpico
Maryland basketball will meet an old, but not so familiar rival once again this season when they take on the Georgetown Hoyas in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
The Maryland Terrapins and Georgetown Hoyas failed to meet for over two decades dating back to a Nov. 23 matchup back in 1993. They will now meet in a home-and-home series for the first time since the 1973-1974 seasons.
Big Ten and Big East officials announced today the matchups for the second annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, a series of games between the two conferences during the first full week of the college basketball season. The Terps and Hoyas will meet on Nov. 15 and are the only rematch from last year’s series.
Maryland leads the all-time series, 37-27, and it will be the first time the two teams meet in Washington since the ’93 season. The two rivals played each other every year from 1947 to 1976, but have met just three times since, including last season’s 75-71 Maryland win. The most recent game was the first time the two schools played in College Park in over 40 years. The two schools located just 20 miles apart will battle once again in what should draw a large local crowd.
Both coaches used the word “excited” in response to the rivalry being renewed for at least one more season.
“We are excited to continue this series with Georgetown,” said Mark Turgeon. “Last season’s game was a tremendous experience for our University, program and fans. It will be an outstanding early season game against a well-coached Georgetown team that we have a lot of respect for.”
Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson added: “We’re excited to host Maryland at home this year. This is a great game for college basketball and for our area. Last year’s game was a hard-fought contest, and we’re looking forward to playing again.”
Here is the entire schedule for the Gavitt Tipoff Games next season:
Monday, Nov. 14
Villanova at Purdue
Tuesday, Nov. 15
Maryland at Georgetown

Wednesday, Nov. 16

The Terps are coming off one of the best seasons in program history and made the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 2003 season. They were ranked in the Top-25 all season long and finished 12th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Next: Who Will Start for Terps Next Season?
Maryland basketball will have a different look next season. As of today, all five starters from a year ago could be gone to the NBA, so who knows who will start for the Terps next season. As a fan of local talents matching up against one another, let’s hope the Maryland-Georgetown rivalry is here to stay.
