Maryland Terrapins Basketball: Nail Biter over Georgetown

The Maryland Terrapins basketball team took on the Georgetown Hoyas last night in College Park, MD. The Terps came away with the win, 75-71. Not only did they beat a well-rounded Georgetown team, but they showed why they are such an influential college basketball program.

Rasheed Sulaimon made a three-pointer with 1:18 in the game to break the 68-68 tie. Maryland also got 24 points from Melo Trimble. It ended up being Sulaimon’s only bucket of the half. However, it gave the Terps the jolt that they needed to win the game.

Trimble put the game away when he was fouled hard with :12 seconds remaining on the clock. He went to the free-throw line and drained both free throws. He went back to the line with :03 remaining and hit both of his free throws again and finished the night with 24 points.

Bradley Hayes had 16 points and eight rebounds for Georgetown, and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 14. Smith-Rivera hit a three-pointer at the :05 second mark to pull the Hoyas within two. It ended up being a fruitless effort, but valiant nonetheless. The Hoyas are now 0-2 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

Jake Layman scored 15 for Maryland, and Robert Carter added 12.

Maryland (2-0) played the game decked out in their throwback uniforms yesterday, which paid homage to the previous Terrapins team that played against the Hoyas in College Park in 1973:

Like the old Deion Sanders saying goes, “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good.” The Terps looked like stars and they played like it as well.

The Terps also took this retro picture to commemorate the game against Georgetown:

On hand for the game was famed SportsCenter anchor, Scott Van Pelt as well as Len Elmore, Greivis Vasquez, Steve Francis, Joe Smith, and Juan Dixon. Vasquez was especially happy to be there:

"“It’s always good to be back here,” Vasquez told Van Pelt. “It’s always good to come back and be with the best fans in college basketball, best school around the world. I’m really happy and proud to be here.”"

Vasquez also took a picture with the previously mentioned Francis and Dixon:

Scott Van Pelt finished the night with a SportsCenter special at College Park. He made his rounds and then ended his night with one last tweet:

Georgetown’s John Thompson III realized the weight of the rivalry and hopes to see it continue despite his team’s loss:

"“It’s important,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said after his team’s 75-71 loss. “Not just Georgetown-Maryland but Georgetown-Syracuse, Georgetown-UConn. There’s a lot of history there. It’s important to play these games. As bad as we feel right now, hopefully in the long run this will help us out.“I do think it’s important for the sport — not that we’re doing this for the good of the sport, because it’s good for Georgetown, (too).” More from The Baltimore WireWhat other Baltimore Orioles Offseason Storylines will you be interested in seeing?Baltimore Orioles to Face Numerous Playoff Contenders Down the StretchBaltimore Orioles Showing Encouraging Signs During Recent WinsThe Baltimore Orioles and the Expanded September RosterMaryland Football: Terps honor Jordan McNair, beat Longhorns 34-29"

Maryland’s head coach Mark Turgeon felt the same way about the budding rivalry:

"“Today was definitely good for college basketball, and good for basketball in this area,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. “This is a game we’re going to be talking about for awhile. … It was really cool. I don’t think you could have written a better script — Georgetown would have liked to change the outcome. But it was played at a high level; it came down to the wire.”“Wow,” Turgeon said. “What a great game. That’s why it’s called a rivalry game, I guess. Georgetown was tremendous. We’re lucky to win it.”"

It was a great all-around night for former and current Terps. Hopefully a night they hope to repeat in the future against Georgetown.
