Baltimore Ravens: 2015 Wide Receiver Grades
By Joe Serpico
At a time when Baltimore was desperate for receiving help, giving up a seventh-round pick to the St. Louis Rams did not seem like that big of a loss. After watching Givens play in the final 11 games of the season, Ozzie Newsome should have held onto that draft pick.
A one-trick pony paired with Flacco’s strong arm, Givens was expected to use his elite speed to stretch the Ravens offense. The Ravens were missing that element with Torrey Smith in San Francisco and Perriman out due to injury. We learned real quick why he was not seeing the field on a Rams team that also needed help at receiver.
Givens never made the impact that many felt he would. He was brought to Baltimore because of his speed, but that did not translate into the Ravens offense. He was held to two receptions or less in eight games, including three games without a catch. Not only was he not catching the ball, but he was not making those big plays as he reached the 50-yard mark just twice, with his highest total being a 68-yard effort in the loss to the Miami Dolphins.
There is little reason to believe that Givens will be back in 2016 as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The only thing the Ravens wish they could get back is that draft pick.
