There are some pretty lofty expectations for the Maryland basketball team this season. The Terps come in at No. 3 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The only two teams ahead of them are Kentucky (1) and North Carolina (2).

Mark Turgeon has assembled a very talented group of players this season. The Terps really came on strong last season, but fell to West Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. With three starters returning, a few highly-touted transfers, and a top-10 recruit, Maryland is in good position to compete for a national championship.

The Terps are among five Big Ten teams to be named in the preseason poll. The others were Michigan State (13), Indiana (15), Wisconsin (17) and Purdue (24).

Even Maryland’s Big Ten foes realize how good this team can be. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo spoke on the Terps at Big Ten Media Day earlier in the week. “Maryland is definitely the cream of the crop, with what they’ve got coming back,” Izzo said.

Here’s what Turgeon had to say about his squad at Media Day.

The last time the Terps were ranked No. 3 in the preseason coaches’ poll, they beat Indiana in the national championship. Just a fun fact.
