  1. Defense: the Secondary

The secondary suffered from injuries last season, which allowed 248 passing yards per game. Jimmy Smith was a major factor in the poor defense when he went down with a foot injury in week eight.

The injury was originally supposed to last a few weeks, but it ended up being season ending. The defense felt his absence.

The team must have felt a sigh of relief when he was practicing during mandatory minicamp. He did not practice as if he was fully recovered, but it was a good sign. No reports show Smith being unable to participate during training camp.

If he can start the season without any restrictions, the secondary is going to see an immediate improvement.

As we stay with the secondary, Terrence Brooks surprised many people with his participation during the offseason. He suffered a season-ending knee injury in week 15, and he has been ahead of schedule for most of his recovery.

However, despite his participating during the offseason, it was uncertain how much he would practice during the beginning of training camp. Now, we know despite being ahead of schedule, he was not far enough as the Ravens placed him on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list today. He now could miss at least the first six games of the season.

If Brooks remains on the PUP list after week one, he has to miss the first six games of the season.

He is an important part for the secondary, and the team cannot afford to go the entire season without him. His recovery was ahead of schedule, so it is still possible for him to be removed from the PUP list before the regular season begins. He does not have to miss the first six games if he is removed before the Ravens’ September 13 match-up against the Denver Broncos.

Lardarius Webb has struggled with injuries throughout his career. Last year, he hurt himself in the beginning of training camp, which would go on to cause him to miss four games and affect his performance on the field.

He is healthy headed into training camp, and he is set on staying healthy throughout training camp headed into week one. He does not have to battle for a roster spot, so the most important thing for him to do during this time is remain healthy.
