Baltimore Ravens Rookies Preview Entering Training Camp
By Joe Serpico
Darren Waller
Waller is a massive target at 6-foot-6 and 238 pounds who is a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses. He has terrific straight line speed for his size, running a 4.46 forty-yard-dash, and plucks the ball out of the air whether it be on downfield passes or in red zone situations. He is also an imposing blocker on the outside.
He was an interesting pick because he does have a history of marijuana usage in his past, and the Ravens were thought to stay away with players with off the field issues. He needs to develop as a route runner, largely in part that he played in Georgia Tech’s triple option offense. There is another Georgia Tech wide receiver in the NFL that has done a pretty good job (Calvin Johnson) and maybe the Ravens have found a late round gem with Waller.
Marc Trestman has had success with players of Waller’s size and he could be a big weapon in the red zone. There are a number of receivers battling for the final roster spots, but none offer a wingspan that is merely impossible for a cornerback to cover. It will be interesting to see if Waller can make the transition to the NFL.
