On Sunday, Maryland Terrapins point guard Melo Trimble was officially named to the United States roster in the next month’s Pan American Games in Canada. Trimble is one of 12 players selected to the roster, which includes both college and professional players.

The rising sophomore, at just 20 years of age, was the youngest player named to the team. Some other notable names who will be representing the United States include Virginia’s Malcolm Brogdon, Wichita State’s Ron Baker, and Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine. The head coach will be Mark Few, the coach at Gonzaga.

It’s always a special and unique opportunity to be able to represent your country against talented players from other nations, so this is just a testament to how good Trimble actually is. Trimble was one of the better freshmen in the country this past season, averaging 16.2 points, 3.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game on a very surprising Terps team.

One of the intriguing matchups during the Pan-Am Games, which Maryland basketball fans should be looking forward to is the game against the Venezuelan national team, which features former Terps star guard and current Milwaukee Buck, Greivis Vasquez. Vasquez meant a great deal to the basketball program at Maryland during his career, and now Trimble does the same, as Maryland has risen up the college ranks.

Team USA will be moving to Chicago Monday morning to begin practice at the Chicago Bulls training facility. The Games are slated to begin on July 21 in Toronto.
