Baltimore Orioles: The Complete Guide to Orioles Acquired Players

Jonathan Villar – 2B/SS
If there’s one player you likely know from these trades, it’s probably Jonathan Villar, as he’s been in the majors for some time now.
Villar’s been in the league since 2008 but he’s still just 27-years-old. A former top-100 prospect, Villar was loved for his power/speed combo, but that never really translated into major success.
He started his career with the Philadelphia Phillies until he was traded in 2011 to the Houston Astros along with J.A. Happ and Anthony Gose for Roy Oswalt. In 2015, the Astros dealt him to the Brewers for Cy Sneed, and it was in Milwaukee that Villar finally found success.
Villar’s breakout season happened in 2016, when he finished the year slashing .285/.369/.457 with 19 home runs, 92 runs, 63 RBI, and 62 steals. He saw some significant regression last season, slashing .241/.293/.372 with 11 home runs, 49 runs, 40 RBI, and 23 steals and has had a similar year this year, slashing .261/.315/.377 with six home runs, 26 runs, 22 RBI, and 14 steals so far.
Villar is a solid player, but he looks to just be a fill-in for Jonathan Schoop now that he’s been traded. Villar’s biggest asset is his speed, as evidenced by his 62 steals in 2016.
There’s always the chance that he re-captures the magic of his 2016 breakout season, but so far that year seems to be an outlier and not the new norm. Still, he’s just 27 years old and could improve.
