Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will join Maryland football as the program’s new offensive coordinator.

Maryland football has yet again made another solid hire in their coaching staff. Former LSU Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada will have the same role with the Maryland Terrapins football team.

After former Maryland football Offensive Coordinator Walt Bell left the program for Florida State in the same role, the Terps wasted no time as Matt Canada emerged as the leading candidate to become the offensive coordinator and it was officially announced Monday.

The Terps did not have the best season on the field last season but they certainly have made up for it this offseason with recruiting and coaching staff hires. Canada will be inheriting an experienced offensive line now that Offensive Linemen Derwin Gray and Damien Prince are returning to Maryland for their senior years.

Canada will share the offensive coordinator responsibilities with Chris Beatty who was promoted from wide receivers coach after just three years. According to Inside Maryland Sports’ Jeff Ermann Terps had high praise for Canada’s ability to produce prolific offenses.

"“Matt has a unique ability to utilize any and all types of personnel, and still produce extremely explosive offenses,” said Durkin said in the release. “He’s a very versatile coach that has experience developing impact players at every offensive position. Matt’s had a great deal of success everywhere he’s been and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him here at Maryland.”"

The offensive coordinator comes to Maryland with 25 years of coaching experience spanning across programs such as Northern Illinois (1998-2003;2011), Indiana (2004-10), Wisconsin (2012), North Carolina State (2013-15), Pittsburgh (2016) and another one-year stint last season with LSU.

Throughout his coaching career, Canada has produced several NFL draft picks: Pittsburgh quarterback Nathan Peterman, NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett and Wisconsin running backs Montee Ball, James White and Melvin Gordon. Read more about Canada’s accolades here.

We don’t know what Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill are going to look like coming off of ACL injuries last season but it’s comforting to know that with this hire, the offense was made a priority.

Most noteworthy, the hire not only helps Maryland football on the field but in recruiting as well. Beatty has been known for his recruiting prowess and now that Canada is in the mix, recruiting at the quarterback position could become easier for the Terps as well.
