AL East 2017 Positional Rankings: Home to the Power Bullpens
By Nate Wardle
2. New York Yankees – Dellin Betances, Aroldis Chapman, Adam Warren, Chasen Shreve, Tyler Clippard, Chad Green, Jonathan Holder, Tommy Kahnle, David Robertson, Bryan Mitchell, Tommy Layne, Giovanny Gallegos
You look at the names here and probably can’t imagine them not being in first. The Yankees’ bullpen went 29-24 with a 3.34 ERA, good enough for third in the AL and third in all of baseball. You might be able to guess the top two.
The Yankees had 36 saves, which came from a number of people. In fact, the back end of the Yankees’ pen had some issues in 2017, and was one of the weakest spots, believe it or not, on the team.
Aroldis Chapman lost the job for a while. Dellin Betances took his spot but then he was removed as well. In fact, six Yankees had saves, including those two, Adam Warren, David Robertson, Bryan Mitchell and Tyler Clippard.
Green had a great year with a 1.83 ERA in 40 games. Robertson was even better once acquired from the White Sox, he appeared in 30 games and had a 1.03 ERA with a 5-0 record. Chapman had a not bad 3.22 ERA, while Betances was 2.87. Clippard was actually the worst pitcher in the bullpen, with a 4.95 ERA in 40 games.
