Baltimore Orioles: 5 Left-Handed Relievers the Orioles Could Pursue
By Ben Palmer
5. Glen Perkins
Glen Perkins had over 30 saves for three consecutive years, from 2013 through 2015. During that time, he was one of the better closers in baseball. But injuries, including a torn rotator cuff in 2016, have limited him to just 7.2 innings pitched in the past two years.
Perkins isn’t exactly a young guy, he’s 35 years old, but if he’s looking to come back to the majors, he would likely be inexpensive, and given that the Baltimore Orioles won’t need him in high-leverage situations necessarily, they could take a shot at him with a cheap one-year comeback deal.
If Perkins is healthy, he’s a solid reliever with loads of strikeout potential. If you want a look what he can do, here he is in 2015 with a great slider to secure a save:
Generally speaking, Perkins just sticks with a fastball and slider combination, which works just fine for a reliever like him. His fastball sits around 90 MPH and his slider floats in around 80 MPH, and that speed difference (combined with the movement he gets on his slider) can easily throw hitters off-balance.
