Maryland basketball just scored a big commitment as June is coming to close. Mount Saint Joseph (Baltimore, Md.) power forward Jalen Smith committed to Maryland Monday night, June 26 via Twitter, three days after his official visit with the school.
Maryland basketball just landed the No. 29 best player nationally, the No. 12 power forward, and No. 2 best player in Maryland. according to the 247Sports Composite.
With his commitment, Maryland now has their second commit of the 2018 class, the No. 7 2018 class nationally and the No. 2 Big Ten recruiting class. This is a huge get for the Terps, especially since their first commit was Wesleyan Christian High School Forward Aaron Wiggins.

Looking at film on Jalen Smith, Maryland is getting a good one in the 6-foot-10, 195 pound, power forward. He has good size and post moves which is great offensively but what I was impressed with was his defensive ability. He has great awareness and can block shots . They still have Michal Cekovsky and Ivan Bender but the more size a team has down low offensively and defensively, the better off they are.
Hereβs what 247Sports Writer Jeff Ermann had to say about the move via Twitter.
Jalen Smith is #Terps' 2nd-highest rated commit in the past 15 years, behind Diamond Stone. Asst Bino Ranson recruited him since 8th grade.

#Terps frontcourt was thin. Getting a huge talent injection with Bruno Fernando in '17 and Jalen Smith in '18. They'll take one more big.

Along with Jalen Smith, #Terps chasing more top bigs. Blue-chippers Moses Brown and Silvio De Sousa among them. Turgeon could sign two more.

This could set off a domino effect for Maryland basketball on the recruiting trail. Mark Turgeon and his coaching staff have been working hard and thus far it has paid off big time.
