Baltimore Orioles rotation

Wade Miley, LHP

Nickname: Miley Cyrus

This one’s not my call. He once told a little kid not to call him Miley Cyrus. Using the laws of childhood, the nickname sticks.

Ubaldo Jimenez, RHP

Nickname: DFA

Ubaldo has many nicknames among fans of the Orioles. Baseball-reference says it’s “U.” Individual internet threads use words I’m not contractually able to type.

I think we all have a nickname we wouldn’t mind using for him: Designated For Assignment.

Kevin Gausman, RHP

Nickname: Dunkin

You hear “Gas Man”, and on days he pitched early in his career, you may have heard “It’s the first/second/third day of Gausmas.” I don’t want to bring up negativity toward a guy I once drank a beer with. I don’t want to bring up the fact that he has allowed a league leading 58 earned runs. I don’t want to bring up his 4.4 BB/9, nearly double last years rate. I do want to bring up his addiction to powdered donuts. Dunkin sticks, quite literally.

Chris Tillman, RHP

Nickname: *(

The one-time ace and opening day starter is now the league leader in batting average allowed and WHIP—leading in the wrong direction. His strikeout rate and walk rate are only separated by two percentage points, and all of that added together makes him glorified as the worst statistical starting pitcher in all of Major League Baseball. He gets the saddest emoji.

Dylan Bundy, RHP

Nickname: Serial K’er

This works on so many levels. His last name is Bundy, as in Ted Bundy (the 7th and 8th word on Ted’s Wikipedia page are literally “Serial Killer”). He’s only sporting a 17% strike out rate, but his cutter is young and only just getting used this year. Once that cutter becomes more effective, that rate should start crawling upwards, and Bundy will easily live up to this nickname.

Alec Asher, RHP

Nickname: Big Cat

“(The) nickname I got when I first started playing pro ball was “The Big Cat.” My roommate my first season of pro ball was Australian. That was his slang. He always used to say I was ‘The Big Cat,’ and it is ended up just sticking.” –Alec Asher. He leads the league in batters hit by pitches with seven so far, so maybe we could get creative and think of “Gus Weyhing 2.0” or something.
