The 2017 MLB Draft provided hope for Baltimore Orioles fans as they wrap up this year’s draft with one of their best classes in years.

For the majority of Baltimore Orioles fans, and most Americans for that matter, the MLB draft is a snooze. Players they’ve never heard of getting drafted, being thrust into a modicum of the spotlight. Then they disappear for years until they become relevant on a major league level.

In the NBA, players can contribute in college in April and average 15/5/5 in their professional October. In the NFL, we see rookies outperform their veteran counterparts even in the early weeks.

Baseball is different.

In baseball, you must wait.

Baltimore Orioles fans adore Trey Mancini right now. Trey made his way through the minors with decent speed—and it still took three years. While he has been mashing and has become a fan favorite, he wasn’t even considered among the great prospects that year and heard his name in the 8th round.

More from The Baltimore Wire

Other more prominent names the Orioles took ahead of him include Hunter Harvey (22 overall), Josh Hart (37), and Chance Sisco (61). Between Sisco and Mancini, five other men received that call to wear the black and orange. None has achieved Trey’s status.

Mancini’s rise from the middle of the pack to Major League prominence is nothing new. Look deeper into that 2013 draft, and you’ll see a few more names who’ve reached the high levels of professional competition. Jimmy Yacabonis (399), Stefan Crichton (699) Donnie Hart (819) are all currently on the 40-man roster, while Drew Dosch (219), and Mike Yastrzemski (429) are all knocking on the big-league door in AAA.

As we look for years to come in the Baltimore Orioles franchise, let’s break down the future. Who from this 2017 Orioles Draft will rise, and who will fall off into obscurity.

Disclaimer: I’m a writer, not a scout. This will be 100% inaccurate. If one of these predictions comes true, I deserve a position on Gary Rajsich’s scouting team.
