Baltimore Orioles bring up Verrett, Yacabonis as Jackson gets DFA
The latest Baltimore Orioles news features a series of moves in efforts to stabilize a pitching staff that has reached rock bottom.
The Baltimore Orioles have recalled pitcher Logan Verrett from Triple-A Norfolk and picked up pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis‘ contract from the Norfolk Tides. Furthermore, the Orioles optioned pitcher Stefan Crichton to Norfolk and a designated for assignment move for Edwin Jackson transpired.
The Orioles latest attempts to revive one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB comes after being absolutely embarrassed on national television by the division-rival Yankees 16-3. Tillman proceeded to tumble his way through the 2017 season Saturday night, as he allowed nine earned runs and three home runs in just 1.1 innings pitched.
Next up to pitch was Crichton and Jackson, who combined, gave up five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched, as they essentially performed a tryout session to remain on the Orioles. After failing to meet expectations, both Crichton and Jackson were no longer part of the Baltimore Orioles roster the next day. With two empty spots to fill on the Orioles roster, right-handed pitcher Verrett and 25-year-old Yacabonis were called on to join the Orioles.

From St. Joseph’s University, the Orioles drafted Yacabonis in the 13th round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft and has earned his chance at the MLB level after a superb 0.90 ERA in 30 innings pitched in 2017 for the Tides. As a reliever, Yacabonis collected 18 strikeouts and didn’t give up a single home run this season in Norfolk, an accomplishment the Orioles hope translates at the MLB level.
Yacabonis has dazzled as of late by not allowing an earned run in his last seven appearances, a stretch that dates back to May 24. The chart below reveals Yacabonis’ sizzling stretch of shutout baseball that resulted in a chance to shine with the Orioles now rather than later.

Verrett makes his return back to the Orioles after a short stint at Triple-A Norfolk where he appeared in four games and pitch two innings with a 13.50 ERA. However, once a major piece to last year’s New York Mets roster, Verrett has the capability to flourish with the Orioles as he gets the chance to make an immediate impact.
The 26-year-old has displayed his potential at times this season, including an outing against the Washington Nationals when Verrett tossed three shutout innings in extra innings.
Next: Orioles pitching sucks, so let's start with O's bullpen needs
Now with reliever Darren O’Day joining Orioles closer Zach Britton on the DL and unreliable pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez and Mike Wright lurking in the bullpen, expect Verrett and Yacabonis to make straightaway appearances.
