Both the Orioles and the Washington Nationals were vying for a spot in the postseason in their respective leagues. The Nationals had allowed starter Max Scherzer to remain in the game in the seventh to face Machado, with the lead 3-2. With J.J. Hardy on third and two outs, Machado took a 2-2 pitch from Scherzer over the left-center field wall to put the Orioles on top, 4-3.
The Orioles would eventually go on to win the game by the same score, however, not before closer, Jonathan Papelbon joined the “I’m not a Manny Machado fan” club.
What you didn’t see in the first video is Machado apparently standing to admire the deep fly ball that gave the O’s the lead. Papelbon took exception to that.
The video embedded doesn’t show the previous inside pitch that did not make contact with Machado.
When asked about the incident after the game, Papelbon told reporters,
"“If Manny thinks I hit him, then that’s what he thinks. I’m not going to sit here and go back and forth whether I did or whether I didn’t, cause it doesn’t matter. If he thinks I did, that’s what he thinks.”"
It looked almost exactly as it seemed.
