The Washington Wizards have come to a verbal agreement with recently-released point guard Brandon Jennings. Jennings won’t be able to officially sign with the team until Wednesday when he clears waivers.

The Washington Wizards have come to a verbal agreement with point guard Brandon Jennings, who was recently released by the New York Knicks, per Chris Hayes on Twitter.

Jennings won’t be able to actually sign with the team until Wednesday when he clears waivers, but all signs point to him joining the Washington Wizards when that happens.

There’s no word yet on what his contract will be worth, however the Wizards only really have a couple million dollars in cap room to play around with.

Likely, Jennings will sign for the veteran minimum, as many other recent free agents, including Deron Williams, have done. That league minimum would be a salary of $325K.

More from Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards also currently have a full 15-man roster, so for Jennings to join the team, someone will have to be released. Personally, I think that’s likely to be someone like Trey Burke or perhaps Tomas Satoransky.

It had been previously reported that the Wizards were interested in signing Jennings, and it looks like they’re going to get their wish. Jennings should be an excellent bench option, someone who has the capability to be a good scorer and passer behind John Wall.

Jennings signed a one-year deal with the Knicks this past offseason, and has put up 8.6 points per game, 4.9 assists per game, shooting 38%, while averaging 24.6 minutes per game.

Jennings’ 24.6 minutes per game and 8.6 points per game, and 4.9 assists per game is the most he’s had in a season since 2014.

The Wizards had previously been linked to former Los Angeles Lakers guard Lou Williams, but Williams was traded to the Houston Rockets just before the NBA Trade Deadline.

Jennings was the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft, coming out of Oak Hill Academy. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks and spent four years as a starter for them.

Over the past few years, Jennings has spent his time as a backup point guard for the Detroit Pistons and, most recently, the Knicks, who released him a few days ago.
