AL East Rankings: Does Wieters departure hurt the Baltimore Orioles?
By Nate Wardle
Baltimore Orioles’ catcher Welington Castillo replaces Wieters, but how does he rank among the rest of the AL East catchers?
The Baltimore Orioles will be the only team in the division starting the season with a new catcher behind the plate, despite several changes at the position in the AL East.
The Orioles added Welington Castillo in the offseason, while the Yankees traded Brian McCann and the Rays signed Wilson Ramos, who is expected to miss a large chunk of the season as he recovers from his ACL injury.
To recap, the 2016 end of season rankings featured the following order:
5. Tampa Bay Rays
4. Toronto Blue Jays
3. Baltimore Orioles
2. New York Yankees
1. Boston Red Sox
Can Sandy Leon‘s breakout year keep him in the number one ranking, or will the young star, Gary Sanchez supplant him?
