Maryland basketball advances to 19-2 on the season and remains atop the Big Ten following a critical road win against Minnesota.

Following Maryland basketball‘s devastating loss to Minnesota last season, the Terps took care of business this time around as they withstand Minnesota on the road to win 85-78 Saturday afternoon. With the victory Saturday, the Terrapins continue atop the Big Ten standings at 7-1.

Maryland’s freshman forward Justin Jackson put on an epic performance against Minnesota scoring a career-high 28 points with 10 rebounds for his first double-double of his collegiate career.

Maryland’s other sensational freshman Kevin Huerter added 19 points as Jackson, and Huerter combined for 10-of-12 from beyond the arc to lift the Terps to their sixth straight win. Renowned Maryland star Melo Trimble was just an assist shy from a double-double scoring 13 points with nine assists.

Despite the No. 22 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll, Maryland came into Saturday’s game as four and a half point underdogs to an unranked Minnesota team. As usual, the Terps soaked in the underdog label as they stormed back from a poor start and 12-point deficit with 9:22 in the first half.

Both teams traded leads as the biggest lead in the final 12 minutes was just three points in a thrilling finish. Once the Terps took a 75-74 lead with two minutes remaining, thanks to a Justin Jackson layup, Maryland never trailed again. Huerter hit a corner three to put the Terps up by three points with Trimble and Jackson scoring Maryland’s last six points to secure a Terps victory.

Maryland is now winners of 12 of their last 13 games with their lone Big Ten loss coming from a late game collapse against Nebraska on New Year’s Day. With No. 17 Duke, No. 16 Creighton, and No. 14 Notre Dame all falling this week, expect No. 22 Maryland to move up in the AP Top 25 when the new polls are released Monday.
