The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team suffers a major setback following a home loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The Maryland Terrapins came into 2017 with a matchup against the Nebraska Cornhuskers at XFINITY Center, a place where they have lost just twice entering this season. A win Sunday would not only lift the Terps to a B1G Ten record of 2-0 but also a return to the Top 25 national rankings.

However, the Maryland Terrapins squandered those chances, just like the Washington Redskins did with their playoff chances at FedEx Field Sunday afternoon, just 10 miles south of College Park, Maryland.

Despite Maryland’s 64-51 lead with just over six minutes remaining following  Maryland’s 17-0 run in the second half, the Terps didn’t have a solution to stopping Nebraska’s Tai Webster. The lone Nebraska senior lead his team to a furious late-game comeback with 18 points as the Cornhuskers finish the game on 14-0 run to blow past Maryland, 67-65.

Maryland went scoreless in the final six minutes, failing to score on nine consecutive possessions that included three of their total 16 turnovers. Maryland’s home loss to Nebraska Sunday marks the second defeat at XFINITY Center this season, something the team hasn’t done since joining the B1G Ten.

Maryland’s second half breakdown spoiled a career performance by the former Shenendehowa Central standout Kevin Huerter. The freshman guard scored a career-best 26 points with seven three-pointers.

Glynn Watson Jr. added 12 of his 17 points in the second half to ignite Nebraska’s late game comeback. Nebraska is off to an unexpected 2-0 start in B1G Ten play after two shocking road wins against Indiana and Maryland.

Maryland’s star guard Melo Trimble added 14 points and five rebounds. Excluding Huerter’s seven three-pointers, the Terps shot 4-of-14 from beyond the arc. Maryland’s big man Damonte Dodd returned to action Sunday with six points, four rebounds, and one block in 13 minutes of play. Sunday was Dodd’s first game since Maryland’s one-point victory over Oklahoma State on Dec. 3rd.

Other Terp’s big man Michal Cekovsky missed his fifth game of the season with a left ankle injury. In nine game this season, Cekovsky is averaging 10 points and 3.5 rebounds.
