2. Henderson Alvarez – DNP in 2016 season

Another young guy, Henderson Alvarez has shown flashes of brilliance, but his health has been an issue. He was unable to make it back to the majors in 2016 after having shoulder surgery, and only pitched 22.1 innings in 2015.

However, in his last full year in the majors in 2014, Alvarez pitched to a 12-7 record, 2.65 ERA, and 1.24 WHIP, and the best part about it, he’s only 26, so there’s plenty of time for him to rehab and return.

Alvarez made 11 minor league appearances last season, so it is reasonable to assume that he could realistically contribute this year. Because of the injury concerns, he won’t be expensive, and he could potentially be an excellent starter.

He’s a major risk/reward guy, but at the price he’ll likely be at, the risk is relatively low, and the reward is pretty high.
