Starting Pitchers

Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Wade Miley, Ubaldo Jimenez, Yovani Gallardo, Logan Verrett, Joe Gunkel, Mike Wright, Tyler Wilson, Chris Lee

No one is exactly sure what the Orioles are going to do with their six starters, but they seem determined to keep them. Some have said Dylan Bundy might be ticketed for the bullpen, which I think is ridiculous. He is healthy; Buck said there is no innings limit; Bundy is one of your best pitchers, he will be in the rotation. What happens with Wade Miley, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Yovani Gallardo are yet to be seen. I honestly feel like a healthy Gallardo can be a solid contributor for the Orioles, and Miley could be too. Then again, Jimenez was the Orioles’ best pitcher the last two months of the year. It isn’t the Red Sox rotation, but it still might be a surprisingly good one.

I don’t expect any moves to affect the rotation until at least Spring Training, where there is a chance that Joe Gunkel, Tyler Wilson or Mike Wright shows they have put it together and makes it possible to trade one of these and not have a major hole should an injury occur. I think Gunkel has a chance, as he is a guy who pitches to contact, is durable and has proven himself at every level. Wright and Wilson remain giant question marks, both are capable pitchers at AAA but struggle consistently in the majors.

Chris Lee is going to be in the rotation, but not yet. He missed much of 2016 due to injuries, and will likely be in AA Bowie while he re-establishes himself and moves up the ladder.

I believe that Verrett is going to make the team, but probably as a long reliever. He has the ability and the arm to be a starter, but I think the place he will be needed is in the bullpen.
