The Maryland Terrapins men’s basketball team is off to a 7-0 start but still find themselves outside of the AP College Basketball Top 25 Poll.

The Maryland Terrapins just wrapped up a weekend in Brooklyn, New York where they captured the Barclays Center Classic championship title following wins against Richmond and Kansas State. However, their winning start and latest sequence of impressive wins were not enough to place in the AP Top 25 poll.

The Terps earned 126 receiving votes, putting them 26th, just outside the top 25 teams. Syracuse, Oregon, Florida, and West Virginia rank No. 22, No. 23, No. 24, No. 25 in the latest AP poll. All four of those teams lost last week as Syracuse (4-1) fell to an impressive South Carolina (6-0) team and Oregon (4-2), who dropped 10 spots in the AP poll, lost to Georgetown (2-2). However, Oregon finished the week on a strong note, beating Tennessee (1-3) and UConn (2-4).

Ranked 24th in the AP poll, the Florida Gators (6-1) came up short against Gonzaga (5-0) but was victorious against Miami (4-2). Finally, West Virginia (4-1) took the loss against the suddenly surging Temple Owls who are now 4-2 on the season with wins against Florida State and No. 25 West Virginia.

Maryland began the season No. 25 in the AP Top 25 Poll and without losing a game, the Terps fell out of the AP Poll after an unconvincing season-opening win against American. The Terps haven’t been ranked in the AP poll since the first week of the season as they remain undefeated at 7-0 on the season.

You can make the case that Maryland should be ranked over teams like Florida and Oregon after some ugly wins this past week. It’s hard to understand how a team starts the season in the top 25 and hasn’t lost a game yet this season still finds themselves outside the Top 25 now. Maryland has two notable wins on their resume after beating an inconsistent Georgetown team on the road along with a convincing win against Kansas State in a neutral court setting Saturday night.

Despite being unranked in the AP poll, the Maryland Terrapins moved up one spot to No. 22 in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll. Except for the Terps matchup against Charlotte in Baltimore, Maryland on December 20th, the Terps play seven of their next eight games at home.

Maryland will once again have the chance to convince the AP Pollsters around the country this week when they take on Pittsburgh (5-1) Tuesday in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and Oklahoma State (5-1) Saturday night at XFINITY Center. Perhaps by next week, the Terps will have a well-deserved number in front of their name.
