Baltimore Orioles: DH Trumbo, Ortiz Headline Class of Sluggers in AL East
By Nate Wardle
1. Boston Red Sox – David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez
Preseason prediction, 2nd – David Ortiz, Chris Young, Travis Shaw
An All-Star at the age of 40, Ortiz was also a Silver Slugger and sixth in the MVP race. Ortiz had a fabulous season, hitting .315/.420/.620 (AL-best), with 38 HRs, 48 2Bs (AL-best), 127 RBIs (tied with Encarnacion for AL-best), 79 runs and an almost equal walk to strikeout ratio.
Ortiz was the DH for 140 games, with Hanley Ramirez the only other player over ten starts at the position.
Let’s look at some of the statistical rankings for the 40-year-old to wrap this up. batting average, 6th; on-base percentage, 3rd; slugging percentage, 1st; total bases, 7th; doubles, 1st; home runs, 8th; RBIs, 1st; extra-base hits, 1st. There is no doubt that the future Hall of Famer had a season to remember, in fact, it may have been his finest performance.
All that’s left now is the pitching but leave your thoughts below. And Baltimore Orioles fans, we can be happy that Ortiz, Encarnacion, and Rodriguez all appear to be out of the AL East!
