3. Baltimore Orioles – Pedro Alvarez, Mark Trumbo

Preseason prediction – 3rd, Mark Trumbo, Jimmy Paredes, Caleb Joseph

If Mark Trumbo played the most games at DH, he probably would be second. But, he didn’t, and Pedro Alvarez did. Alvarez wasn’t terrible for the Baltimore Orioles. In 85 starts at DH, and almost 110 games total, Alvarez hit .249/.322/,504 with 20 HRs, 22 2Bs, 49 RBIs and 43 runs. For an everyday position player, the role of being a DH who did not play every day was an adjustment for Alvarez. He struggled early with it, got hot in the middle of the season, and then was used sparingly down the stretch as Mark Trumbo was moved to DH and a better defense was employed.

Heading toward 2017, both Alvarez and Trumbo are free agents. The Baltimore Orioles would like to keep Trumbo, and I imagine Alvarez is going to go to an AL team so he can be a DH, so the Baltimore Orioles are still in play there, although I wouldn’t expect a signing there to occur until near Spring Training, if at all.
