After eight seasons that included four All-Star appearances, Matt Wieters and the Baltimore Orioles decided to part ways. Last season’s backup catcher for the Orioles, Caleb Joesph could not produce a home run or a RBI in 141 plate appearances in 2016, eliminating him from being the Orioles starting catcher in 2017.

As a result, the Orioles should acquire a catcher this offseason, and that’s where former Oriole Nick Hundley comes into play. Hundley played a significant role with the Orioles in 2014 when Wieters missed a majority of the season, recovering from Tommy John surgery. Last year with the Rockies, Hundley hit .260 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs in 317 plate appearances.

If the Orioles were to sign Hundley, it would likely be just a one-year deal as the organization’s top prospect Chance Sisco inches closer to the majors and ultimately becomes the team’s everyday catcher. Despite hitting .320 in Double-A last year, Sisco has only played four games for the Orioles’ Triple-A team and needs some more time for development. Hundley is a viable option to be the Orioles starting catcher in 2017 as the organization patiently anticipates the arrival of Sisco.
