Are the Maryland Terrapins playing down to their opponents or is it their young roster?

The Maryland Terrapins played the Towson Tigers this afternoon at Comcast Center.  Normally, this wouldn’t have been a close game for the Terps in years past. This game, on the other hand, was very close with the Terps down as many as nine in the second half.

If it weren’t for the 71-66 comeback win over Towson Sunday afternoon, the Terps would’ve lost this game. It would’ve made every Towson Tiger fan wonder if they were the best team in the State of Maryland.

It seems like every Maryland basketball game is a nail-biter. Is it due to a young roster? The good thing is that they’ve played well down the stretch in the 2nd half.

Are the Maryland Terrapins playing down to their opponents?

The Maryland Terrapins seem to be playing down to their opponents, no matter which game. I’m thinking it;s because of the young roster.  In total, Maryland only has two seniors on the roster. Melo Trimble came back for his junior season after having an injury-riddled sophomore campaign.

If it weren’t for his off sophomore season, he also wouldn’t be on the roster which would’ve made this season even more of a struggle.  Don’t get me wrong, and they haven’t lost a game this season, but it hasn’t been easy.

Just think, if Robert Carter and Diamond Stone decided to return this season, I have no doubt that these games against American, Georgetown, and Towson would’ve been blowouts.

It all comes down to talent. Are the players that Mark Turgeon recruits good enough at this level? I haven’t been that impressed by anyone else on the roster besides Trimble. I’m hoping some of the freshmen give Trimble some help, or else teams will always double-team him.

If you can stop Trimble, then the Terps will always be beatable. Once Trimble gets consistent help from others on the roster, the Terps will always be playing down to their opponent. It won’t get any easier once the Big 10 schedule starts.

The teams in the Big 10 conference have better talent and will most likely blow out this Terps team if they don’t start to improve. Now I understand why Maryland was picked to finish between seven and ten in the Big Ten.

Is Maryland is playing down to its opponents or is this the result of a young roster? I’m hoping it’s the result of a young roster that needs to play together for everything to kick in.
