1. Boston Red Sox – Dustin Pedroia

Preseason prediction: 1st, Pedroia, Brock Holt, Deven Marrero

Did you expect to see anyone else?

Dustin Pedroia is in his 11th season, and at age 33 hit .318/.376/.449 with 15 HRs, 36 2Bs, 74 RBIs, 105 runs and 61 walks to 73 strikeouts. While many of the guys on this list have power, but strike out a ton and don’t walk at all, Pedroia does it all. For a second baseman, 15 HRs is not insignificant. But, the other numbers continue to be Hall of Fame worthy. Pedroia finished third in the AL in average, was third in hits, ninth in runs scored, first in singles and 10th in doubles. That is just the offensive categories, oh and his oWAR was 4.4.

Defensively, his dWAR was 1.8. While the range isn’t quite what it once was, Pedroia will still get to most balls hit his way. This isn’t a Derek Jeter scenario. He had the second best fielding percentage for a second baseman (behind only Robinson Cano), and is the top active second baseman at many defensive metrics.

The only thing slowing Pedroia at this point will be Father Time, but I don’t see that happening for at least a couple more years.

Second base continued to be one of the strongest positions in the American League East.
