Baltimore Orioles: Jonathan Schoop Soars in AL East Second Base Rankings
By Nate Wardle
3. New York Yankees – Starlin Castro
Preseason prediction: 2nd, Castro, Dustin Ackley, Rob Refsnyder, Pete Kozma
Starlin Castro stayed healthy, and productive in his first year in Yankee pinstripes after being traded from the Chicago Cubs.
I said coming in that Castro was durable (only Yankee to start over ten games at the position), and was a good average hitter.
Castro hit to a .270/.300/.433 clip, although he did strike out a lot and rarely walked (a theme for Castro, Travis and Jonathan Schoop to come). Castro also added 21 HRs (the most in his career), 29 2Bs, 70 RBIs and 63 runs. It was a very successful year for Castro at the plate.
Starlin did struggle a little why playing the field, but he has never been known for his defense. His dWAR was -0.3, and his range was below league average. However, he only committed 12 errors, which is not bad for a second baseman. This after he was frequently in the top five in errors while a short stop in Chicago.
Overall, a good first year for Castro, and while he may never be an All-Star at second base in the American League, he will continue to be a good player for the Yankees.
