Caleb Joseph regressed as a hitter in 2016. Now, as the backup catcher, you aren’t going to see a lot of consistent playing time, and it appears Caleb may be a guy who needs that.

But, hitting .174 with no HRs, no RBIs, and only 3 2Bs in 141 at-bats is not going to cut it.

For a guy who was lauded for his offense in the minors, 2016 was a rough year for Caleb.

Yes, Caleb dealt with his own injury concerns in 2016, most notably a nasty injury after he took a foul ball off the groin.

And his defense remain solid, throwing out 31 percent of baserunners attempting to steal.

For a guy who was lauded for his offense in the minors, 2016 was a rough year for Caleb.

Which is going to set up an interesting 2017. Matt Wieters will likely be gone, meaning right now Caleb is the starter on the team. They could go bring in a more experienced veteran, or hand the reins over to Chance Sisco, but I think right now it is Caleb’s position to lose.
