Orioles: Five Players Who Experienced a Sub-Par 2016 Season
By Nate Wardle
Speaking of big new contracts, Darren O’Day makes it at number two on the list. Now, I must say that most of his issues come from being injured at several points during the season, not from being effective.
However, the Orioles spent 31 million dollars in the offseason (almost eight million a year) on a setup man. And they also were counting on O’Day’s durability, as in his previous four seasons in Baltimore, O’Day had appeared in 68 or 69 games each year.
O’Day also has several years left to prove his contract was a good one.
In 2016, they only got half of that, as O’Day appeared in 34 games. His ERA of 3.77 was considerably higher than the 2.11 average ERA O’Day has achieved since joining the Orioles.
O’Day’s WHIP of 1.226 was also much higher than what it had been during the previous four years, as his ERAs were 2.28, 2.18, 1.70, 1.52 respectively.
The good news is that O’Day also has several years left to prove his contract was a good one.
