First-Team Defense Must Play Better

Yes, the Ravens won last Thursday, but the starters did not exactly wow you. The defense was the most troubling. Cam Newton directed his offense to points on his only series, and did it at will.

The reigning MVP went 5-for-6 for 36 yards before being replaced by former Raven Derek Anderson. The Panthers moved the ball deep into Ravens territory on a 14-play drive, but settled for a field goal after Newton overthrew Ted Ginn in the back of the end zone.

The troubling part of the series was how easily the Panthers moved down the field. Newton picked on Shareece Wright and the rest of the secondary did not show much either. The run defense, a strength of this team, allowed 29 yards on the ground in that single possession.

The Colts have a high-powered offense of their own, led by quarterback Andrew Luck. The defense must have a better showing this time out or it’s going to be another long season of watching the defense get scorched.
