The Baltimore Ravens have activated wide receiver Steve Smith from the physically unable to perform list and expect him to practice on Monday.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh got his defensive leader back on Monday. They will have their veteran on offense back in the mix next week.

The Ravens have activated Steve Smith from the PUP list after passing his physical. He is expected to begin practicing on Monday.

Some have wondered why he will practice Monday and not immediately. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun explained that Smith will not play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, and there are no other practices until Monday.

It’s not hard to understand the logic. Smith is nowhere near game shape and risk another injury by having him play Saturday. The bigger goal is to have him ready for the regular season opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Terrell Suggs and Smith both were coming back from an Achilles injury and their loss was a huge reason why the Ravens finished 5-11 last season. With both players back on the field, the Ravens have their swagger back on both sides of the ball.

This is expected to be Smith’s final season in the NFL and the debate whether he should make the Hall of Fame will be an interesting one. He has 961 receptions for 13,932 yards and 76 touchdowns in his career. If I had a vote, he gets a shrine in Canton.

Offensive coordinator Marc Trestman is expected to use the 37-year-old as the top receiving option on the team. With that said, Baltimore does have the most depth at receiver since Harbaugh took over as head coach.

Next: Terrell Suggs Back at Practice

Expect big things from the receiving corps this season. Smith will be the leader, but Perriman, Mike Wallace and Kamar Aiken should all make plays for the Ravens this season.
