The Baltimore Orioles just finished a road trip at 5-5.  Not just any road trip, but a West Coast road trip in Oakland and San Francisco, with the Chicago White Sox at the start.

For a team that is 27-34 on the road, to split a West Coast trip (their last of the year) is not bad. But, there are several items inside the games that help make the trip another successful one for the Orioles.

First, they won two of the three series. Only a 1-3 series against the Oakland Athletics was a series loss for the O’s. They beat the White Sox in two out of three and did the same to the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants.

The pitching in the games was pretty good. The O’s left up 5 (in a bizarre game where the bullpen blew up), 2, 2, 3, 2, 1, 6 (another game where the bullpen struggled), 2, 6, and 7 runs in those ten games.

These were the numbers by the starters in those 10 games:

1 – 7-5 W over the White Sox: Gallardo (W) 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 K

2 – 2-4 L vs. CWS: Tillman (L) 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 K

3 – 10-2 W vs CWS: Bundy (W) 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 9 K

4 – 2-3 L vs. Athletics: Gausman (L) 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K

5 – 1-2 L vs. A’s: Miley (L) 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 K

6 – 0-1 L vs. A’s: Gallardo (L) 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K

7 – 9-6 W vs. A’s: Tillman (W) 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 K

8 – 5-2 W vs. Giants: Bundy (W) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 K

9 – 2-6 L vs. Giants: Gausman (L) 4 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 9 K 6 BB

10 – 8-7 W vs. Giants: Miley 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 1 K

So, what can we take from those starts?  Well, the only one in which the starting pitcher did not get a decision was the comeback win on Sunday, where Wade Miley exited early and struggled.

In addition, the first seven games of the trip were all quality starts. However, four of them were losses.  So, the offensive struggles continue to keep the O’s from the top of their potential.

Dylan Bundy earned wins in both his starts, Kevin Gausman losses in both of his, although he only allowed two runs in each start.

Gausman’s start on Saturday was hampered by six walks, although comments by both he and Buck Showalter after the game indicated he was better than his line.

For a team that continues to be all about the pitching, this trip was a success.  The only pitcher who is really not keeping the O’s in games at this point is Wade Miley.  Hopefully he can settle in over the next few starts.

The bullpen had a few hiccups, but not enough to blow any games. The Birds will have to rely on Mychal Givens more, and also Donnie Hart.  Hart has been very good in his use as a lefty specialist.

More from Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles, as mentioned earlier by my colleague Randy Buchman, only lost half a game to the Blue Jays while on the trip.  They now only have 20 road games left, while the Blue Jays have 25 and the Red Sox have 30!

The team is still well-entrenched in a playoff spot, and now hopefully can make that even more so by beating up on the Red Sox and Eduardo Rodriguez on Tuesday in Baltimore.

The Baltimore Orioles are a playoff team with just over a month and a half left in the season.

And despite splitting 10 games, the team showed they just might have what it takes to contend in the postseason.
