Ravens News: Terrell Suggs Back, Kaelin Clay Waived
By Joe Serpico
The Baltimore Ravens welcomed outside linebacker Terrell Suggs back to the field for the first time since Week 1 last season, and waived wide receiver and kick returner Kaelin Clay.
The Ravens finally have their defensive leader back on the field.
Terrell Suggs has been itching at the chance to practice once again, but the Ravens were being cautious with the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks. He opened training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and did not take part in any drills leading up to the Ravens first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
He ran the team’s grueling conditioning test earlier in camp without John Harbaugh knowing in an attempt to show the coaches he was ready. He took the field Monday for the first time in 11 months after tearing his Achilles for the second time of this career.
It remains to be seen if Suggs plays in the preseason. The team could opt to hold him out until Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills.
With Suggs’ return, four players remain on the PUP list. Steve Smith, Breshad Perriman, Elvis Dumervil and Lorenzo Taliaferro are still out, but Harbaugh has already said that all will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Other News:
In addition to Suggs’ return, tight end Crockett Gillmore, Michael Campanaro and Maurice Canady all practiced today after missing time with injuries.
The list of players not at practice was high, with nine players being held out. Kyle Arrington, Daniel Brown, Chris Matthews, Chris Moore, Dennis Pitta, Sheldon Price, John Urschel, Maxx Williams, Tavon Young all did not take part in Monday’s practice.
Baltimore made a roster move by waiving wide receiver and kick returner Kaelin Clay. He did not help his cause by muffing a punt in the preseason opener and the only way he was making the team was as a special teams player.

Clay gave the Ravens special teams a jolt last season with the only special teams touched and was in the competition for return duties this year. Keenan Reynolds, Tavon Young, Terrance West and Kenneth Dixon all returned kicks against the Panthers.
Rookie free agent wide receiver Darius Clay was brought in to take Clay’s spot on the roster. He had 30 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns in his final season with the Missouri Tigers.
