Baltimore Ravens: 3 Biggest Surprises of Training Camp
By Joe Serpico
Tavon Young
The rookie cornerback has dazzled coaches and the media in practices, making plays all over the field. The 5-foot-9 corner deemed too small to play anywhere but the nickel position, is having the best camp of all the defensive backs.
The Temple product, known for his tenacity and playmaking ability, has been doing just that in his first NFL training camp. He always seems to be tight on his receiver, either making a play on the ball or making it difficult for the receiver to make the catch. Young came up with two interceptions in one practice, and has his hands on the ball on several others.
He has learned the defense much quicker than anticipated, but that is what you expect from a player coached by Matt Rhule. The Temple program is built on physical and mental toughness, and Baltimore may have found a starter on the third day of the draft.
It is one thing to pick off your own quarterbacks, it is another to make plays in a game. Young will have a chance to really make a name for himself on Thursday when they take on a Panthers team that has some large wide receivers. He is a lock to make the roster, and a strong showing in preseason games can earn him playing time once the regular season begins.
