Maryland basketball will not have any players drafted in the first round, according to FanSided’s NBA Mock Draft.

The 2016 NBA Draft is tomorrow evening, but it could be a long night for some former Maryland Terrapins.

The FanSided NBA Network has released their final NBA Mock Draft just days ahead of the event scheduled to be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The 30-picks in the first round do not include any former Terrapins.

That does not come as much of a shock as every Terps saw their draft stock fall as the season progressed. Melo Trimble had his stock fall so far that he decided to come back for his junior season. While that was a great day for Maryland basketball fans, it had to be rough for Melo.

The rest of Maryland’s starting lineup – seniors Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon, junior Robert Carter and freshman Diamond Stone – all hope to hear their names called on Thursday night. Just not in the first round, according to our colleagues who cover the NBA.

That doesn’t mean it still is not possible.

Stone figures to be the first Terp to have his name called, and other mock drafts around the web have him going late in the first. A CBSSports.com mock has Stone going to the Golden State Warriors at No. 30, while a NBA.com’s recent mock has him as the 25th pick.

While Stone still has a chance to go in the first round, it’s a significant drop off from earlier in the year when many speculated that he could be a lottery pick. Now, he does not know if he will get that guaranteed contract that first-founders receive at all.

Carter and Layman both have a good chance of being selected in the second round. If so, it would be the first time that Maryland basketball had had three players drafted in the same draft since 2002. That year, Chris Wilcox was the No. 8 selection, Juan Dixon was drafted 17th overall and Lonny Baxter was taken with the 44th pick.

That leaves Sulaimon as the one former Terp that might not have his named called. He had a vital role for the Terps, but his game does not transition to the NBA, unlike his teammates. He has an opportunity to make a living playing in Europe, but it would be a surprise to see him in an NBA jersey.

It is exciting to see so many former Terrapins heading into the NBA, it is just another reminder of just how disappointing last season was. Mark Turgeon had a talented bunch that had the pieces to be a championship contender.

We are not sorry Melo is coming back to College Park, but we wish his four former teammates the best as they hope to become professionals.
