Baltimore Ravens: Top 3 Moves of 2016 NFL Offseason
By Joe Serpico
No. 1: Signing Eric Weddle
For all the struggles the Ravens had on offense and the additions of Wallace and Dixon will be a huge boost, the defense was the Ravens biggest liability. Their biggest weakness was the back end of the secondary, where the Kendrick Lewis and Will Hill experiment failed miserably.
When the news broke that the San Diego Chargers and Weddle had decided to go separate ways, he was a person that immediately should have been on the Ravens radar. He has played in a similar scheme much of his career and the Ravens had a glaring need at safety. It seemed as if it was a match destined to happen.
The Ravens will enter 2016 with a completely different look in the secondary. Weddle will be teamed up with Lardarius Webb, who is making the shift from cornerback to safety. Jimmy Smith will continue to man one corner spot, while the other will likely come down to a training camp battle between Shareece Wright, Jerraud Powers and Will Davis.
Baltimore needed a leader in the secondary and have acquired that in the three-time Pro Bowler. While he is no longer in his prime, Weddle is still one of the top safeties in football. The Baltimore Ravens have not had that since Ed Reed was making plays.
