Joe Flacco‘s Recovery

In all honesty, there are five guys coming off injury I could have touched on about their recovery. However, the Ravens have just one guy making over $20 million – the next closest in salary this season is Lardarius Webb at $9.5 million – and that’s quarterback Joe Flacco.

Jamison Hensley of ESPN reported that the Ravens will be the only team that will be without their starting quarterback for OTAs. While that is no surprise to many of us coming off an ACL injury, it is important to note that he will be missing valuable time with newcomers Mike Wallace and Ben Watson, and last year’s first-round pick Breshad Perriman, who I will touch on in a bit.

As Hensley noted, this will be the first time in nine years that Flacco will not be on the field entering OTAs. It is the first injury of his NFL career and one that many players need over a year to full recover from. Harbaugh has said that Flacco should be full go come training camp, but we all know that teams like to throw smoke signals out to the rest of the league.

Ryan Mallett will take the first-team reps with Flacco on the mend. Mallett started the last two games for Baltimore, including a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers that gave the Ravens a sweep against their bitter rivals. This is an important offseason for Mallett if he hopes to win over teams and possibly becoming a starter once again in the NFL.

While it’s not necessary for Flacco to participate, these workouts do get players acclimated with one another. Fortunately, this is the first time in a while that the Ravens have retained the same offensive coordinator from the previous year, so Flacco does not have to learn a new system.
