Baltimore Ravens: Boise State OLB Kamalei Correa is Newest Pass Rusher
By Joe Serpico
The Baltimore Ravens took Kamalei Correa with the 42nd pick after trades with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins.
After two trades that pushed them back in the second round, the Ravens took their pass rusher with the selection of Boise State outside linebacker Kamalei Correa.
The pick gives Baltimore another young pass rusher with Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil as the starters. Correa and last year’s fourth-round pick, Za’Darius Smith, will also be in the mix.
Correa is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii and earned second-team All-Mountain West accolades following the 2015 season. He led the Broncos with 11 tackles for loss and seven sacks, and is known for having a relentless motor. He had plenty to say after the Ravens made him the pick.
The Hawaiian is an ideal fit in the Ravens 3-4 defense. He is explosive off the snap, getting into the backfield in a hurry. He will run down ball carriers from the backside with his speed, which is a weapon.
Where Correa needs development is in his pass rush moves. He is great at beating his blocker with his speed, but once offensive lineman get their hands on him, he’s standing still. He is a lot stronger than he looks, but struggles to get off blocks and needs to learn to use his hands better at the next level.
The Ravens trading back gave them a lot of picks to use. They still have the 70, 104, 107, 130, 132, 134, 146, 182, and 209 picks to go, but another trade is likely with the acquired picks. Baltimore now has five picks in the fourth round with picks 132 and 134 being compensatory picks so they cannot be traded.
