Baltimore Ravens: Worst Draft Picks of Each Round
By Joe Serpico
The Baltimore Ravens have been one of the best when it comes to the NFL Draft, but not every pick has worked out. Here are the worst players drafted in each round.
The Ravens have generally struck gold with their draft choices. That does not mean they are perfect by any means. And at some positions, they have been downright awful.
Baltimore has really struggled to draft quality receivers as three wide outs made the list. In fact, the Ravens drafted three in the 2004 draft, and not one made a name for himself on a team desperate for receivers. Torrey Smith is without a doubt the only receiver the franchise has drafted that had a solid career, and he’s turned into a bonafide star either.
There are several players that did not make the list or not mentioned later that were up for consideration. Deron Jenkins is often forgotten because the Ravens hit the jackpot with Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis being the two picks ahead of him. Devard Darling is another name that many felt would stick around in Baltimore for a while. Terrence Cody is more known for his animal cruelty charges than anything he did on the field. Troy Smith, a Heisman Trophy winner, never played to that level, but he was not a first-round flop like Tim Tebow either and that’s why he does not make this list.
As you get into the third day of the draft, it is easy to say a player that failed to make the team should be considered a bad pick. But some were worse than others and had us believing they could turn into solid pros. For every Adalius Thomas, there is a Clarence Moore. You win some and you lose some. That’s the nature of the NFL draft.
Ozzie Newsome gets a lot of credit for drafting some of the league’s best, but he has missed on a few picks as well. We have already written a piece about the biggest busts in Ravens history, but we touched on five early picks. Today we unveil the worst picks of each round in Ravens history.
