Baltimore Ravens: QB Matt Schaub Headed to Atlanta Falcons
By Joe Serpico
Matt Schaub, the Baltimore Ravens backup to Joe Flacco last season, will now be the backup to Matt Ryan in Atlanta.
After a failed stint with the Ravens, Matt Schaub is headed back to the team that drafted him as he signed with the Falcons today.
Schaub rejoins the team in which he began his career as the backup to Michael Vick. He was a third-round pick by the Falcons in 2004 and spent three years in Atlanta before being traded to the Houston Texans.
Schaub enjoyed early success with the Texans, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2009 and 2012. As his career played out, he became more known for throwing pick-sixes than completions. He failed to beat out rookie Derek Carr a couple seasons ago and joined the Ravens last offseason.
He was given an opportunity to play this season when Flacco went down with a torn ACL and MCL. He did little in his two starts, throwing three touchdowns and four interceptions, and Jimmy Clausen and Ryan Mallett finish out the season for the Ravens.
Many thought that last season would be the end of his career, but he rejoins Mike Shanahan in Atlanta and has a good chance of sticking around as the backup. Matt Simms and Sean Renfree are currently the quarterbacks behind Ryan.
Schaub was also rumored to potentially join the Denver Broncos, where former Texans coach Gary Kubiak is now at the helm. The Broncos desperately need to find a solution at quarterback with Peyton Manning‘s retirement and Brock Osweiler signing with the Texans today.
The Ravens had no desire to keep Schaub around so it is no real loss to them. Mallett is expected to be the backup to Flacco this season and the team is prepared to use him if Joe is not ready to start the season.

The Falcons better hope they better not need Schaub. The only thing he is good for at this stage of his career is giving easy points to opposing defenses.
